Michael Chang is one of the tennis legends. Michael Chang is really important for Asian-American history, his parents moved to the United States in 1959 and 1966. Michael Chang is known to be the French Open winner at the age of 17 in 1989 defeating Ivan Lendl.
Michael Chang became the third younger tennis player to win a grand slam (17 years, 110 days). In the present day, the tennis has known Naomi Osaka as the first female tennis player to reach the world no. 1. In fact, Naomi Osaka also is known for the subject of racism. Li Na also another example of Asian tennis player who accomplished an amazing career by winning the Australian and French Open.
But to me what makes Michael differs from the other athletes is that his openness towards his faith. But I am also amazed at how Michael Chang thriving against racism in the tennis world as reported by The New York Times. As minorities, I think there will always be a stereotype against us. For that, we need someone to look forward in the future.
I hope that I am writing this to know that racism is just going to separate each other, and I don’t think it is a good thing. Anyway, it was cool enough for Style of Beyond dropping Michael Chang’s name on their song Marco Polo. Although I have no idea what do they meant by “Michael Chang type slang, verb Viet Cong” considering that Michael Chang is Chinese.
